Evidence, Expectation, and the Switch of Faith

What do we mean when we talk about evidence? Most people think evidence is something you can see — proof laid out in front of you. But evidence can also mean something that already exists even though you haven’t seen it yet. That’s the kind of evidence faith works from: the evidence of what you hope for.

Faith is not wishful thinking; it’s a posture of expectation that is justified by the Word of God. The promises of God are yes and amen even when you haven’t seen them fulfilled. The Scriptures are not wishy-washy: they’re not “maybe,” “maybe not,” or “we’ll see.” They’re promises that call for a response of confident expectation.

If you find yourself saying, “I haven’t seen God move,” then the remedy is simple — learn to walk in the expectation of His promises. It’s a daily choice. You flip the switch from doubt to trust. Some will call that “religion” or dismiss it as nonsense. But here’s the truth: if you’re skeptical, it doesn’t mean faith is nonsense — it just means your faith is placed somewhere else.

We all live by faith in something. If you believe your depression defines you, you’ve got faith in your depression. If you believe sickness has the final word, you have faith in sickness. If you trust some system or person to save or provide for you, that’s faith too — just misplaced. The difference is where you set your expectation.

Sometimes we come ready, but not prepared; I asked the Holy Spirit to lead. I always root what I say in Scripture, but today the Spirit was the teacher. One struggle I see often is how easily we get upset when others think differently. We bristle when someone’s expectation differs from ours. But it’s not about arguing who’s right — it’s about deciding what we will believe and what we will expect today.

Remember what Jesus said: He’s the Head and we are the Body. That means we don’t live in isolation. I have to look into someone’s eyes sometimes, into someone else’s eyes, because we receive from one another. We are meant to build expectation together. We strengthen one another; we walk together with great expectation that God’s promises will come to pass.

So flip the switch. Place your faith in the promise of God. Expect His goodness. Walk in that expectation — and allow the body of Christ around you to reinforce it. Amen.
